I looked at magazines at Avril 50, and this one caught my eye. Initially, the matte, illustrative cover called me to pick it up, and inside I really liked the simple, spacious, colorful designs. I also enjoyed the illustrations in the magazine that all felt cohesive in style and relevant to the articles. Overall, I think this magazine was successful in creating a cohesive design throughout the variety of media it presented.

Visit to Avril 50

When I walked into Avril 50, the first thing that captured my attention on the art catalogue section was the newest issue of X-Tra. The blocky color combo popped among many of the other magazines. The magazine itself is mostly about reviews of recent artwork and artist projects made for X-Tra. Though not necessarily related to design, the articles go in depth into the process and concepts behind the art works that I thought are relevant in design as well.

Visit to Avril 50

After browsing the selection at Avril 50, I decided to take a picture of this volume about design called Soffa. The pastel pinks on the lettering pop against the black. The inner pages contained many dark backgrounds next to light backgrounds, providing a pleasing contrast. I also enjoyed the wide margins, as well as the thoughtful font sizes.

Graphics Tools at Penn Museum

Museum Library staff have access to a laser color printer that can handle letter- and legal-size paper.

“Those responsible for designing for the Penn Libraries use InDesign, but my intern and I find building stuff from scratch in InDesign difficult (Lynda.com training just not enough for the occasional user). Instead, we use Canva to compose and manipulate elements, then put in Illustrator in order to integrate the Penn Libs preferred font and add the logo.

“We also use Word for some materials that are wordy and do not require many design elements.

“Penn Libraries has recently changed the ways in which librarians can submit content for the digital media screens in Van Pelt using PowerPoint slides.”
